The Ontario Hospital Association (OHA) in partnership with the Mood Disorder Society of Canada (MDSC) is pleased to present a series of three free broadcasts in the Stop the Stigma <\/strong><\/em>mental health webcast series. These webcasts focus on the stigma of mental illness among health care professions and in relation to Anxiety and Depression.\"Pledge<\/a><\/p>\n

Mental illness can affect anybody, regardless of age, gender, culture, ethnicity, or social class. But no matter who they are, people who have been diagnosed with a mental illness are all likely to experience stigma. Public attitudes and beliefs, often based on fear and misunderstanding, stereotype individuals with mental illness, exposing them to prejudice and discrimination. Stigma affects every issue surrounding mental illness, often with worse consequences than the illness itself.<\/p>\n

In 2001, the World Health Organization declared stigma to be the \u201csingle most important barrier to overcome in the community\u201d.<\/p>\n

Stop the Stigma: Mental Illness Within the Health Care Profession<\/strong><\/p>\n

This webcast will examine statistics as they relate to mental health issues, with a focus on the incidence, prevalence and burden of mental illness. It will also focus on the development of anti- stigma training for health care professionals, why the development of this program was thought necessary, and why doctors agreed so readily to work with the MDSC.<\/p>\n
